The forestry industry in Beleaguered, Canada is facing with a new threat: the pine bug. While the bug has destroyed a large part of the forests in the Beleaguered region, the government and local authorities are trying to find better uses for the damaged wood, searching for solutions in different sectors, from furniture to the energetic industry.

Global warming, an issue of general interest
Global warming is the cause of the increasing number of fires. Thousand of hectares of forests are burnt down everyday, worldwide. On the 2 June American Authorities have evacuated coast of California after multiple fires took place in this area. 850 persons have left the risk area. 10 days after the unleashing of the fire in California, 21 thousand hectares of forest burnt down.

Iminent danger in Romania’s protected areas
There are 963 national protected areas in Romania, which cover 7% of the country’s surface. In UN countries, these type of areas cover almost 14.24%; this underlines our country’s inferiority in this sector. Romania also has 400 Natura 2000 areas, which spread on 17.84% of the country’s territory. They have neither an administrative nor a managerial system.

Global Trends and Africa
The forest cover in Africa, expanded on approximately 650 million hectares, represent 16.8% of the “global forest” and 21.8% of Africa’s surface. The main exporters of wood products from Central and Western Africa are France, Germany, Italy and Spain. Recently, Portugal was added to this list. Currently, China imports larger quantities than these countries, especially logs necessary for producing plywood and veneer.
