The restriction concerning the wood supply from Korrayia led to a decline of the handcrafted wood industry in Varnasi India. This restriction was a consequence of the conservation acts to protect the forests in that region.
The toys, with their lively coloured design have been very popular in local markets from various countries such as France, Russia, Germany and Hong Kong. Nowadays, the wooden toy industry from Varanasi India no longer manufactures those quality products which made it so popular. This is the result of the use of eucalypt wood, of inferior quality instead of the Korraiya wood.
“Before, we used to manufacture toys out of Korrayia wood, but now we use other raw materials, like eucalypt wood. Our products used to have a quality finish, but now they have lost it and their glow. The wood that we currently use is fire wood, and therefore not suitable for this industry.
Moreover, this type of wood is expensive and wet, and the producers are not content with its quality.”, stated Mr. Ram Shankar, a toy maker.
The wooden toys manufacturers claim that the wood they currently use is not only hard to finish but in time, it brakes.
This fact led to the decline of the toy industry |
