Concerned about the high rates of global deforestation, Norway has banned the use of tropical wood in public constructions. This decision has been made due to some scandals caused by the constructions build under government authority. The wood used for these constructions came from tropical forests under conservation, despite the law issued in 2002 which states that tropical wood should only be provided by sustainable resources
The Norvegian government wants to stop trade with any type of tropical wood products, which comes from illegal or exhaustable resources.
This decision turns Norway into an international leader in the conservation policy domanin. No other country has such strict laws in this matter, and the Norvegian government hopes that this action will encourage other countries to adopt this atitude.
Norway is not fundamentaly against deforestations in tropical forests. The pointed problem is that a certified programme to administrate cuttings in this region, does not exist.
Untill such a managerial programme will be adopted concerning tropical wood brought from illegal or exhaustable sources , Norway intends to maintain its position, by banning the usage of this kind of wood in any public construction.
